30-second answer Reviewed 22 Jul 2026

Malaysia has one of Southeast Asia's larger, more diversified economies, with nominal GDP in the hundreds of billions of US dollars and growth typically in the low-to-mid single digits in recent years. Services and manufacturing are the largest contributors to output, alongside a significant commodities sector spanning palm oil, oil and gas, and electronics exports.

  • One of the larger Southeast Asian economies by nominal GDP
  • Growth has generally run in the low-to-mid single digits annually in recent years, with a sharp contraction in 2020 followed by recovery
  • Services and manufacturing are the two largest sectors by contribution to GDP
  • The economy remains meaningfully exposed to commodity exports — palm oil, oil and gas — alongside electronics and electrical exports

What the numbers mean

Malaysia is an upper-middle-income, trade-oriented economy and one of the larger economies in Southeast Asia by nominal output. Growth over the past two decades has generally been moderate and positive, interrupted sharply by the 2020 pandemic-driven contraction, followed by a recovery in subsequent years. As an open economy, Malaysia’s growth is sensitive to global trade conditions, commodity prices, and the performance of its electronics and electrical export sector.

Composition of the economy

  • Services. The largest contributor to GDP, spanning finance, wholesale and retail trade, tourism, telecommunications and business services.
  • Manufacturing. A major sector anchored by electronics and electrical products, machinery, and chemicals, much of it export-oriented.
  • Commodities. Palm oil, rubber, and oil and gas remain economically significant, particularly for export earnings and specific states’ economies.
  • Agriculture. A smaller but still meaningful share of output, dominated by palm oil and other tree crops.
