Geography

Penang consists of two parts: Penang Island, where George Town and most of the tourism economy sit, and Seberang Perai on the mainland, connected to the island by the Penang Bridge, the Second Penang Bridge, and a passenger ferry service. The state sits on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia facing the Strait of Malacca, bordering Kedah to the north and east. Its position along one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes has shaped its economy since the British East India Company established a trading post at George Town in 1786.

Economy

Penang is often described as the “Silicon Valley of the East.” The Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, established in the 1970s, hosts assembly, testing and increasingly design operations for global semiconductor and electronics firms including Intel, AMD, Bosch and Dell, alongside a dense ecosystem of local supply-chain companies. Electrical and electronics products make up the bulk of the state’s exports, and Penang consistently ranks among the top states for GDP per capita outside the Klang Valley. Tourism is the second pillar of the economy, anchored by George Town’s heritage status, its food culture, and beach resorts along the island’s northern coast. Port and logistics activity, centred on Penang Port, supports both the manufacturing and trade sectors.

Penang’s main draw for manufacturers is a mature, skilled engineering workforce built up over five decades of electronics investment, combined with an established supply chain of component makers, testers and logistics providers. InvestPenang, the state investment promotion agency, works alongside federal bodies such as MIDA to support new manufacturing projects, and free industrial zone status at Bayan Lepas gives qualifying export-oriented manufacturers duty exemptions on inputs. Industrial land and skilled labour are more constrained on the island itself, pushing newer investment toward Seberang Perai and neighbouring Kedah’s Kulim Hi-Tech Park. Beyond manufacturing, George Town’s heritage designation brings conservation rules that businesses in the historic core need to work within, alongside a strong hospitality and F&B sector serving both tourists and residents.

Notable places

George Town’s UNESCO-listed core mixes British colonial architecture, Chinese clan jetties, and Peranakan shophouses, and is known for a street-art scene and one of Malaysia’s most celebrated food cultures. Penang Hill offers a funicular ride to cooler elevations above the city, while Kek Lok Si Temple is one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia. Batu Ferringhi’s beaches anchor the island’s resort tourism, and Gurney Drive is a well-known waterfront dining and retail strip. The Penang Bridge and Second Penang Bridge, connecting the island to the mainland, are themselves notable infrastructure landmarks.
