SUKMA (Sukan Malaysia, the Malaysia Games) is a multi-sport games built on a 'mini Olympics' concept that pits youth athletes against one another across states. It has been held biennially since 1986 under the management of the National Sports Council (MSN) together with the state sports councils. It functions as a talent-identification stage: strong performances at SUKMA open the way for young athletes into MSN's development and reserve programmes and ultimately into the Podium Programme, the national elite-athlete preparation programme for international games run by the National Sports Institute (ISN).
- The first SUKMA was held in Kuala Lumpur in April 1986 and it has since been organised biennially, alternating with the SEA Games.
- It is organised by the National Sports Council of Malaysia together with the state sports councils, MSSM, MASUM and the Royal Malaysia Police Sports Council.

- The Podium Programme, launched on 2 February 2016 under the Ministry of Youth and Sports and run by ISN, is the elite-athlete programme that receives the flow of talent from the state sports system.

Every two years, thousands of youth athletes march into a host state’s stadium — not for world medals, but for the pride of their respective states and, for the most talented, a ticket to the national elite stage. That is SUKMA.
What is SUKMA?
SUKMA (Sukan Malaysia, the Malaysia Games) is a multi-sport games built on a “mini Olympics” concept, pitting youth athletes representing their respective states against one another. It brings dozens of sports together under a single games, complete with an opening ceremony, a parade of state contingents and a medal tally — a scaled-down version of the Olympic Games for Malaysia’s younger generation.
Unlike other national championships, SUKMA focuses on athletes at the youth level. This makes it the first arena in which a state’s real talent is tested against other states in genuine competitive conditions.
When did SUKMA begin and who organises it?
The first SUKMA was held in Kuala Lumpur in April 1986. Since then, it has been organised biennially — every two years — alternating with the SEA Games, with states taking turns as host.
Its organisation is managed by the National Sports Council of Malaysia (MSN) together with the state sports councils, the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM), the Malaysian Universities Sports Council (MASUM) and the Royal Malaysia Police Sports Council. The latest edition, SUKMA XXII Selangor 2026, is scheduled to run from 15 to 24 August 2026. The dedicated games for athletes with disabilities, Para SUKMA, is scheduled separately from 5 to 14 September 2026.
How does SUKMA feed the elite talent pipeline?
SUKMA sits on the first rung of Malaysia’s sports development system. Athletes who shine at these games become candidates for promotion to the next levels:
- SUKMA — the state stage for youth athletes to prove themselves.
- MSN’s talent-development and reserve programmes — among them the Talent Programme (Program Bakat) and the Reserve Programme (Program Pelapis), tiered programmes that absorb and hone new talent under MSN.
- The Podium Programme — the national elite-athlete programme.
The Podium Programme was launched on 2 February 2016 under the Ministry of Youth and Sports and is run by the National Sports Institute (ISN). It is designed specifically to prepare elite athletes to achieve world-class performances at major international games such as the Olympic Games, the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Selection of athletes into the Podium Programme is made by ISN based on the selection criteria it sets.
In other words, SUKMA supplies the pool of raw talent, while the reserve and Podium programmes filter and hone that talent into high-performing athletes.
Why do states compete to host?
For a state, hosting SUKMA brings more than pride. Hosting a major games is typically associated with the upgrading or construction of sports facilities such as stadiums, aquatic complexes and training centres, although the scale and long-term benefits vary by state and edition. The advantage of competing on home ground is also often cited as a factor that can help the host contingent’s performance, even though the effect is not guaranteed. (These details need to be verified against official data for each edition.)
What’s next
If you are a young athlete or a parent, track your state’s selection calendar through your respective state sports council, as SUKMA line-ups are usually chosen through state-level championships.
