Low’s Peak itself is named after Hugh Low, a British colonial administrator who led one of the earliest recorded attempts partway up the mountain — he judged the final approach “inaccessible to any but winged animals” and turned back. The true summit was not reached until a later nineteenth-century expedition, but the peak kept his name regardless.
A mountain built from young rock
Mount Kinabalu isn’t a volcano. It’s the exposed top of a granite pluton — a mass of magma that cooled underground and was later pushed upward as the rock above it eroded away. What makes it unusual is how recently that cooling happened: the granite is dated to roughly 7 to 8 million years old, which makes it one of the youngest exposed granitic plutons documented anywhere on Earth, according to the International Union of Geological Sciences, which lists it among the world’s recognised geological heritage sites.
The uplift that keeps pushing the mountain higher is linked to the loss of a dense root of rock beneath Sabah around the same period — once that weight was gone, the crust above it rose.
