Fly into Kuala Lumpur from Kota Kinabalu and you cross more than an internal border — you cross several hundred kilometres of open sea. Malaysia is one country stapled together across two separate landmasses, and that simple fact of shape has quietly decided almost everything else: where the cities are, where the rice fields are, and which coast floods every December.
One country, two landmasses
Malaysia sits on Peninsular Malaysia, the long finger of land hanging off mainland Southeast Asia, and East Malaysia, the northern third of the island of Borneo — home to the states of Sabah and Sarawak. The two are separated by the South China Sea, and each borders different countries: the Peninsula shares a land border with Thailand to the north and faces Singapore across the Strait of Johor to the south, while East Malaysia borders Indonesia to the south and Brunei, which sits enclaved inside Sarawak, to the north.
Together the two landmasses cover a total land area of 330,534 km² — smaller than a lot of people expect for a country with such a long coastline on both sides.
That two-part shape is not a footnote. It is the reason “Malaysia” and “Peninsular Malaysia” are not the same thing, why flights between the two halves feel like international travel in everything but the passport stamp, and why Sabah and Sarawak have always had a more distant, more negotiated relationship with the federal government in Kuala Lumpur than the eleven peninsular states do.
The spine down the middle of the Peninsula
Look at a relief map of Peninsular Malaysia and one feature dominates: a chain of mountains running roughly north–south through the centre, the Titiwangsa Range. It is the backbone of the Peninsula, and it does two jobs at once.
First, it is a watershed. Rain that falls on its slopes drains east or west depending on which side of the crest it lands, feeding the rivers — the Pahang, the Perak, the Kelantan among them — that peninsular Malaysians have farmed, fished and traded along for centuries.
Second, it is a wall. The range’s highest point, Gunung Tahan, rises to 2,187 metres on the Pahang–Kelantan border, inside what is now Taman Negara — Malaysia’s national park. A spine of highlands that tall, running the length of the Peninsula, does not just sit there scenically. It forces settlement outward.
Why everyone lives on the edges
Peninsular Malaysia’s usable land is arranged like a sandwich: narrow coastal plains on the west and east, rising through foothills into the central highlands, then dropping again to plains on the other side. Almost nobody chose to build a city in the mountainous middle.
The west coast plain is the wider and gentler of the two, and it is no accident that it holds most of the Peninsula’s population and its biggest cities — Kuala Lumpur, George Town, Johor Bahru. The Strait of Malacca in front of it is sheltered water, calmed by Sumatra sitting across the strait, which made it one of the great trading corridors of maritime Southeast Asia long before Malaysia existed as a country. Ports could sit safely at river mouths and grow into sultanates, then colonial towns, then modern state capitals.
The east coast plain faces the open South China Sea instead of a sheltered strait, and its rhythm has always been different — more agrarian and fishing-based, more shaped by the monsoon swells rolling in off the open sea (more on that below). Kelantan, on that coast, is Malaysia’s least urbanised state at 44.1% under the 2020 Census (DOSM) — a lasting sign of how the sheltered west coast pulled ahead in trade and city-building.
Either way, the pattern holds: coastal plain and river valley for people, mountain interior for forest and, this century, hydroelectric dams and highland agriculture.
East Malaysia repeats the pattern, at a bigger scale
Cross the South China Sea to Sabah and Sarawak and the same logic shows up again, only larger. A mountainous interior — anchored in Sabah by the Crocker Range — separates a narrow coastal strip from the deep Bornean rainforest inland. State capitals and population centres, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching among them, sit on the coast or up navigable rivers, exactly where the peninsular pattern would predict.
Sabah’s version of “the tallest peak forces respect” is not subtle. Mount Kinabalu rises to 4,095 metres — not just the highest point in Malaysia, but the highest peak anywhere between the Himalayas and New Guinea. It sits inside Kinabalu Park, Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its granite summit is visible from much of Sabah’s west coast on a clear day, a permanent landmark for a coastline that otherwise offers few.

A climate with two switches, not one
Malaysia’s location near the equator gives it a genuinely tropical climate — hot and humid year-round, with daily temperature swings bigger than the swing between seasons. But “tropical” undersells how structured the rainfall actually is. Malaysia’s weather runs on two alternating monsoon winds, with short transitional periods in between.
The Northeast Monsoon blows from roughly November to March, and it is the one that makes the news: it drives heavy rain and periodic flooding into the east coast states of the Peninsula, the west coast of Sarawak, and the east coast of Sabah, as moisture-laden winds sweep in off the South China Sea. The Southwest Monsoon, roughly May to September, is comparatively drier and affects the opposite side of the country. Between the two sit brief inter-monsoon periods of more localised, unpredictable thunderstorms.
This is not a minor seasonal footnote — it is a second-order geography lesson layered on top of the first. The same coastal plain that concentrated settlement on the east coast of the Peninsula also puts those settlements directly in the path of the Northeast Monsoon’s heaviest rain, which is why flooding around November and December is a recurring, almost calendar-bound event there, in a way it simply isn’t on the west coast at the same time of year. Traditional planting and fishing seasons on each coast were built around this alternation long before modern flood forecasting existed.
Common mistakes
- Treating Malaysia as one landmass. Maps that show only the Peninsula, or only Borneo, are showing part of the country, not all of it.
- Assuming the monsoon hits everywhere at once. The Northeast and Southwest Monsoons affect different coasts at different times — “monsoon season” in Terengganu and “monsoon season” in Kedah do not mean the same months of misery.
- Mixing up the two record peaks. Gunung Tahan (2,187 m) is the highest point in Peninsular Malaysia; Mount Kinabalu (4,095 m) is the highest point in the whole country, and they sit on entirely different landmasses, separated by the South China Sea.
- Reading “coastal” as “flat everywhere.” Malaysia’s coastal plains are narrow. Drive inland from almost any coastal city on either landmass and the land starts climbing within an hour or two.
