Malaysia lies almost entirely between 1°N and 7°N, close enough to the equator that the sun never gives it a real winter or a real dry season. That constant heat and moisture, acting for tens of millions of years on ancient, unglaciated rainforest, is the reason Malaysia — despite covering under 0.3% of Earth's land area — is recognised as one of the world's megadiverse countries, home to hundreds of mammal, bird, reptile and amphibian species and tens of thousands of plant species.

Why Malaysia Is One of the World’s Megadiverse Countries
Stand anywhere in Malaysia in January and again in July and the thermometer will barely have moved. There is no winter to survive, no summer to wait for — just heat, humidity, and rain, recycled almost identically every month of the year. That monotony is not a small detail. It is the entire reason Malaysia’s rainforests exist in the form they do, and it is a direct cause of why this country of just 330,000 square kilometres — under 0.3% of Earth’s land surface — is recognised as one of the world’s megadiverse nations.
An equator with almost no seasons
Malaysia straddles the equator, with the mainland running from roughly 1°N to 7°N. At that latitude, the sun sits close to directly overhead for most of the year, so day length and solar heating barely change from month to month.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) describes the result as “uniform temperature throughout the year,” with annual variation of less than 2°C across most of the country. Daily temperature swings are modest too — MetMalaysia records typical daily ranges of 5–10°C near the coast and 8–12°C inland, where nights cool faster than the coastal air moderated by the sea.
There is no dry season in the way temperate or Mediterranean climates have one. MetMalaysia’s own data show mean relative humidity running at 80–90%, and even the driest months stay wet across most of the country. Some interior stations in Sarawak, such as Long Akah, average more than 5,000mm annually — MetMalaysia identifies it as the wettest place in the country.
Two monsoons, not two seasons
What varies through the year in Malaysia isn’t temperature — it’s the direction of the wind, and how much rain it brings.

MetMalaysia also documents a distinctive local phenomenon on the Peninsula’s west coast called “Sumatras” — squall lines that form over the warm waters of the Strait of Malacca during the Southwest Monsoon and can bring sudden, severe rain, strong winds and flash flooding to coastal areas.
None of this changes the underlying rule: somewhere in Malaysia, it is always the wet season.
What a climate like this builds, over deep time
Constant heat and constant moisture are exactly the conditions tropical rainforest needs to keep growing without interruption. Unlike forests at higher latitudes, Malaysia’s rainforests were never scraped clean by an ice age or forced to restart after a prolonged drought. They are widely regarded as among the oldest continuous tropical forest cover left on Earth — landscapes that have been diversifying for a very long time without a hard reset.
Time and stability compound. A forest that has been quietly diversifying for tens of millions of years, without a hard reset, ends up carrying far more accumulated species than a younger one recovering from disturbance. That is the mechanism behind Malaysia’s next fact.
Megadiverse: the number that gets attention
MyBIS — the government’s official biodiversity portal, run under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability — states plainly that “Malaysia is one of the world’s megadiverse countries,” ranking 12th globally on the National Biodiversity Index. The recorded numbers, by group, are:
- 306 mammal species
- 742 bird species
- 567 reptile species
- 242 amphibian species
- 449+ freshwater fish species, and 500+ marine fish species
- roughly 15,000 vascular plant species
- more than 150,000 invertebrate species
Forest still covers about 54.5% of Malaysia’s land area — around 18 million hectares as of the most recent MyBIS figures — comfortably more than half the country. Roughly 14.5 million hectares of that is gazetted as Permanent Reserved Forest.
One country, two very different halves
Malaysia is split by the South China Sea into Peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo, and the biodiversity on each side has its own character.
Peninsular Malaysia is dominated by the Titiwangsa mountain range (the Main Range), running roughly 500km north–south from the Thai border — high, cooler terrain that hosts montane species found nowhere in the lowlands.
Borneo is where the country’s most extreme numbers concentrate. Mount Kinabalu in Sabah rises to 4,095m, the highest peak anywhere between the Himalayas and New Guinea, creating a vertical corridor of habitats from lowland rainforest to alpine scrub in a single mountain. Sarawak holds an estimated 70% of Malaysia’s peat swamp forest, and Sabah accounts for the largest share of the country’s mangrove forest — 333,019 hectares of the national total of 544,032 hectares recorded by MyBIS.
Common mistakes
Assuming “tropical” means “seasonal rain, dry rest of the year.” That pattern describes monsoon climates further from the equator (parts of India or northern Australia, for instance). Malaysia’s equatorial climate doesn’t have a genuine dry season — it has a wetter monsoon and a less-wet one.
Treating “Malaysia” as biodiversity-uniform. Species lists for Peninsular Malaysia and for Sabah/Sarawak overlap only partially. A mammal or bird common in Borneo’s lowland rainforest may be entirely absent from the Peninsula, and vice versa.
Citing old forest-cover or species figures without a date. Both change as surveys are updated and land use shifts; always check the reporting year on any number before repeating it.
