Many people call it "road tax" and treat it the way they treat income tax or sales tax — pay it, done, don't think about it again until next year. But its official name at JPJ is the Motor Vehicle Licence (LKM): a kind of **licence**, not a tax. This distinction is not just a matter of terminology. It explains why there is a strict time window for renewing it, and why a vehicle that has gone too long without an LKM cannot simply "pay and be done."

## What "road tax" actually is

The LKM is a licence under the Road Transport Act 1987 that allows a vehicle to be used lawfully on public roads in Malaysia — the same law that requires vehicle registration and a driving licence. ## When it can be renewed — and for how long

Per JPJ's official guidelines, the LKM **can only be renewed within the two-month period before its expiry date** — not earlier. For private vehicles, the permitted renewal period is either 6 months or 1 year.
