# Puspakom Inspections: When They're Mandatory, Inspection Codes, Costs and What Happens If You Skip Them

If you own a lorry, van, taxi or e-hailing car, Puspakom's six-monthly calendar is really your road tax calendar — without a valid inspection stamp, JPJ won't let you renew your vehicle licence at all.

## When must your commercial vehicle be inspected?

Every **six months**. Puspakom states that the Road Transport Act 1987 requires all commercial vehicles to undergo a Routine Inspection every six months. This includes lorries, buses, vans, taxis and hire cars. The purpose is simple: to make sure every critical part of the vehicle is still within legal limits and safe to use, so as to reduce road accidents.

The Routine Inspection checks the vehicle's identity (registration, chassis and engine numbers), the vehicle body, headlamp aim, exhaust and other safety components.

## What do the Puspakom inspection codes mean?

Puspakom uses several codes for the different types of inspection. The ones you'll most often come across:

In addition there are Special Inspections (for modifications, rebuilt vehicles, or road tax that has been expired for a long time) and Voluntary Vehicle Inspections (VVI), which are not mandatory.

## How much does a Puspakom inspection cost?

Puspakom states that rates start as low as **RM20 to RM90** depending on the type of inspection and vehicle. For a Routine Inspection, the official rates listed are:

- **Car** — RM50
- **Taxi / E-hailing** — RM55
- **Light lorry** — RM55
- **Heavy lorry** — RM65
- **Motorcycle** — RM35

Mobile inspection services, meanwhile, start as low as RM60 per vehicle.

## E-hailing vehicles and taxis: a different cycle

A private e-hailing vehicle does not need to be inspected as long as it has not yet reached three years of age. Once the vehicle is **three years or older**, it must undergo an e-hailing inspection at Puspakom, and this inspection must be repeated **every year**. Without a valid inspection report, the e-hailing status and road tax cannot be renewed.

## What happens if you skip the inspection?

The Puspakom report is the document JPJ needs before renewing a commercial vehicle's road tax. Without a valid report, road tax renewal is blocked — and a commercial vehicle operating with expired road tax can be issued a compound or summons by JPJ.

One important point: if your vehicle's road tax has been expired for **more than three years**, you can no longer simply do an ordinary Routine Inspection — the vehicle must first undergo a **Special Inspection** before it can be re-registered for operation.
