# MyDigital ID: Malaysia's National Digital Identity

You may already have run into it without realising: a new login screen that pops up when you open MyJPJ or try to renew your road tax. That is MyDigital ID, and throughout 2026 it is shifting from something optional to the only gateway into a growing number of government services.

Yet there are many misconceptions about what MyDigital ID actually is. It is not a card. It is not a replacement for MyKad. Nor is it where your personal data is stored. Understanding what it does — and what it does not do — matters before you judge whether there is anything to worry about.

## What exactly is MyDigital ID?

MyDigital ID is the national digital identity solution that enables **single sign-on** across a range of online services. It was **developed by Mimos Berhad**, the national research and development (R&D) centre, and is **operated by My Digital ID Sdn. Bhd.** under the supervision of the **Prime Minister's Department**. The system was launched on **1 December 2023**, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as the first registrant.

How it works is straightforward: when a service needs to verify that you are really you, MyDigital ID **refers directly to the National Registration Department (JPN) database** — rather than storing a copy of your data somewhere. According to the official website, the app does not store personal data, does not store biometric data, and does not collect or track your online activity.

The biometrics you use to log in (fingerprint or facial recognition) are biometrics **on your own device**, and that data is not sent to an external server. During registration, an additional security layer can check your face in real time against the JPN database to verify identity.

## MyDigital ID versus MyKad — what's the difference?

This is the most frequent source of confusion. Both are your identity, but in different forms and contexts.

The key point: MyDigital ID **complements** MyKad, it does not replace it. According to the official website, it does not replace MyKad for dealings at physical counters and is used only for online identification.

## How do I register?

Registration is **free** for all Malaysian citizens and can be done in several ways:

- **Online** — through the MyDigital ID app with password verification.
- **Kiosk** — at a physical location; bring your MyKad (or MyTentera) and your phone.
- **Pre-registration** — through EPF i-Akaun or a JPN counter to speed up the full registration process.

## The 2026 mandate — when does it become the single login?

This is where it becomes real for most people. Throughout 2026, MyDigital ID shifts from optional to the **only way to log in** for several key government apps.

For **MyJPJ**, from 1 May 2026 all users aged 12 and above are required to use MyDigital ID to access the app, according to the JPJ Director-General. Users who do not register will not be able to log in to access their digital licence or renew road tax; MyPR holders are given an alternative channel for the time being.

It is worth remembering that this intention to make it mandatory is nothing new. MyDigital ID was once scheduled for mandatory implementation at the end of 2024, but that decision was deferred following public objections. By August 2025, the system was reported to have more than 3 million users and to be used across more than 45 platforms spanning the government and private sectors.

## Do I really need it to travel abroad?

Headlines can easily mislead here, so this distinction matters.

MyNIISe adopts MyDigital ID single login from 15 January 2026. That immigration app was first introduced in September 2025 at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex in Johor Bahru (the Johor–Singapore land border), and by 30 December 2025 it had recorded nearly 600,000 downloads and more than 287,000 registered users.

But single login for an app **does not mean the app is mandatory**. On 14 January 2026, the Director-General of Immigration confirmed that **MyNIISe and MyDigital ID are not compulsory** to clear immigration. The existing options remain:

- Physical passport at autogates (e-Gate)
- Manual immigration counters
- The MyBorderPass app

You still need to carry a physical passport for international travel even when using the digital options. This change also does not affect foreign visitors, who can continue to use the existing methods.

## The unresolved privacy questions

This is the part that most honestly needs stating. MyDigital ID's design — the app stores no data, only refers — does reduce some of the risk. But it does not eliminate the concern, because the real question is not about the app itself, but about the database it refers to and the legal framework around it.

Two main issues are frequently raised:

**First, the question of PDPA coverage.** Critics question how far the protection of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 applies when citizens' data is held by a government agency. Former Bar Council president Salim Bashir stressed that any effort to make registration mandatory must be enacted by Parliament through a Federal Act and **aligned with the PDPA 2010**.

**Second, the record of data breaches.** Malaysia has a history of recurring data breaches. Salim Bashir characterised privacy and data-security breaches as a significant challenge to mandatory implementation, with the risk of unauthorised access to and misuse of personal information.

It is for this reason that political pressure exists. When the government raised the possibility of making registration mandatory by law in July 2025, former Klang MP Charles Santiago urged the government to **build confidence** in the system first, rather than taking a legislative shortcut. Low uptake, he argued, points to a confidence problem the government needs to solve, not one to be solved by coercion.

## What's next

If you use MyJPJ, the nearest date is **1 May 2026** — after which, without MyDigital ID, you cannot access your digital licence or renew road tax through the app. Registering early via the app, a kiosk, or EPF/JPN pre-registration avoids a last-minute rush.

If your concern is privacy, distinguish two things: what the app stores (according to official sources, nothing), and what happens to the JPN database it refers to (subject to the still-unresolved question of PDPA coverage). That second question is unresolved, and anyone honestly assessing the system's risk needs to weigh both, not just one.

The government's target remains broad: through Budget 2026, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim set a target of **15 million users by the end of 2026**, and the government aims for **95 percent of public services integrated** with this digital identity by 2030. The direction is clear — more and more services will make MyDigital ID the gateway. Whether registration is ultimately made mandatory by law remains an open question.
