Selangor is the state that Malaysia's economy quietly runs on. It fully encircles the
federal capital Kuala Lumpur and the administrative capital Putrajaya, and together
they form the Klang Valley — the country's largest urban and industrial conurbation.

## Geography

Selangor sits on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, facing the Strait of Malacca,
and forms a horseshoe around the two federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and
Putrajaya. Its coastline holds Port Klang, the country's busiest port, while inland
districts range from dense urban centres like Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam to
agricultural and forested areas further from the Klang Valley core. The state borders
Perak to the north, Pahang to the east, and Negeri Sembilan to the south.

## Economy

Selangor is Malaysia's largest state economy by output, and its industrial base is the
most diversified in the country. Manufacturing clusters around Shah Alam, Klang and
Petaling Jaya cover electronics, automotive parts, consumer goods and pharmaceuticals.
Port Klang handles the bulk of Malaysia's containerised trade, and Kuala Lumpur
International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2, both located in Sepang district within
Selangor, anchor the state's role in aviation and air freight. Cyberjaya, developed as
part of the Multimedia Super Corridor, has grown into a technology and shared-services
hub, while Petaling Jaya and Subang Jaya host a dense concentration of corporate
regional offices. Services, wholesale and retail trade, and financial activities
round out an economy that consistently accounts for the largest single share of
Malaysia's GDP among the states.

## Doing business here

Selangor's appeal for business rests on scale and connectivity: it offers the biggest
consumer market outside Kuala Lumpur proper, direct access to the country's main port
and airport, and industrial land at lower cost than the capital. Free industrial
zones and licensed manufacturing warehouses around Klang, Shah Alam and Bangi support
import/export-oriented operations. Cyberjaya's MSC-status designation gives
qualifying technology and services companies specific tax and regulatory incentives,
while Selangor's state investment agency works alongside federal bodies such as
MIDA on incentive applications. Talent supply benefits from proximity to Kuala
Lumpur's labour market and to universities across the Klang Valley. The main
trade-off is congestion — Selangor's road network carries some of the heaviest
traffic in the country, so logistics planning around Port Klang and KLIA needs to
account for peak-hour delays.

## Notable places

Batu Caves, the Hindu shrine and limestone cave complex in Gombak, is one of
Malaysia's most visited religious and tourist sites. Shah Alam is home to the Sultan
Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia and known
locally as the Blue Mosque. Sunway City in Petaling Jaya combines a theme park,
shopping mall, university and medical centre in a single integrated township. Klang,
the state's royal town, retains a historic core alongside its modern port operations
and is well known for its Little India enclave and street food. Further north,
Kuala Selangor is known for its riverside firefly colonies and nature reserves,
offering a contrast to the state's industrial heartland.
