## Geography

Johor occupies the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, bordered by Pahang to the
north, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan to the northwest, and separated from Singapore by
the narrow Strait of Johor. It is one of the largest peninsular states by land area,
with a coastline on both the South China Sea to the east and the Strait of Malacca
to the west. Johor Bahru, the state capital, sits at the southern tip directly
opposite Singapore, connected by the Johor-Singapore Causeway and the Second Link
expressway crossing further west.

## Economy

Johor's economy combines heavy industry, agriculture and a uniquely close economic
relationship with Singapore. The Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, anchored by
the RAPID refinery project, has made the state a major petrochemical processing and
storage hub. Port of Tanjung Pelepas ranks among the world's busiest container
transshipment ports, competing directly with Singapore's port for regional cargo.
Palm oil and rubber plantations remain significant in Johor's rural economy, while
manufacturing spans electronics, machinery and food processing. The Iskandar Malaysia
development corridor, launched in the 2000s around Johor Bahru, has driven large-scale
property, education and tourism investment, including projects such as Legoland
Malaysia and Forest City. Hundreds of thousands of Malaysians commute daily across
the Causeway to work in Singapore, making labour flows between the two territories a
defining feature of the state's economy.

Johor's pitch to investors rests on lower costs than Singapore combined with direct
access to the Singapore market and its logistics network. The Johor-Singapore
Special Economic Zone arrangement, agreed between the two governments, aims to
deepen this integration further by streamlining cross-border movement of goods,
services and skilled workers. Iskandar Malaysia offers specific investment
incentives for manufacturing, logistics, creative industries and education projects
within its designated zones, administered alongside federal incentives from MIDA.
Businesses serving the Singapore market often locate distribution or light
manufacturing in Johor to take advantage of lower land and labour costs while
remaining within reach of Singapore's port and airport. The main operational
consideration is the Causeway itself, which experiences heavy congestion at peak
commuting hours and requires planning for cross-border logistics timing.

## Notable places

Johor Bahru's waterfront and the historic Sultan Ibrahim Building anchor the city
centre, while Bukit Serene Palace remains an official royal residence. Muar, the
state's royal town, is known locally as Bandar Maharani and retains a well-preserved
colonial-era shophouse district. Desaru, on the east coast, is a beach resort area
popular with both domestic and Singaporean visitors, while Kukup Island is known for
its stilt-house fishing village and seafood. Legoland Malaysia and the broader
Iskandar Puteri development represent the state's push into tourism and integrated
township development.
