# Balik Kampung — Malaysia's Festive Season Homecoming

A few days before a major festival, Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley go
quiet — offices close, shopfronts are boarded up, streets fall silent. Their
residents haven't vanished; they're on the highways, heading to their
family's place of origin. That's **balik kampung**.

The term means returning to one's hometown, and it belongs to no single
race. Malay families return ahead of Aidilfitri, Chinese families ahead of
Chinese New Year, Indian families ahead of Deepavali, and Christian families
ahead of Christmas. The pattern is the same; only the dates differ.

## Why it's this big

The root cause is economic geography. Jobs are concentrated in a handful of
urban clusters, while families of origin remain in other states. According
to the Population and Housing Census of Malaysia 2020, **75.1 percent** of
Malaysia's population lives in urban areas, up from 70.9 percent in 2010.

At every festival, a large share of that urban population moves at once in
the opposite direction to the daily commute — and returns again a few days
later.

## Effect on traffic

The official figures for Aidilfitri 2026 give a sense of the scale:

Op Selamat is run by PDRM every festive season, not only for Aidilfitri —
Op Selamat 25 ran for Chinese New Year, with a target of reducing the
accident, fatal accident and death rate by at least five percent compared
to the previous operation.

## Effect on the economy

Balik kampung moves spending, not just people. Money that would normally be
spent in the cities flows instead into markets, sundry shops, petrol
stations and lodging outside the cities over the course of a few days.

The season's effect shows up in official data. DOSM reported Malaysia's
wholesale and retail trade sales at **RM169 billion in March 2026** — the
month of Aidilfitri that year — up 9.8 percent from the year before, with
retail sales of RM72 billion. This monthly figure is shaped by many factors,
so it reflects a seasonal demand pattern rather than the effect of balik
kampung alone.

The government also intervenes on travel costs. For Aidilfitri 2026, LLM
announced a 50 percent toll discount for Class 1 and Class 2 vehicles on
the **Penang Bridge**, from 00:00:01 on 18 March 2026 until 23:59:59 on
19 March 2026.

## Common mistakes

- **Assuming it's only an Aidilfitri thing.** Op Selamat also runs for other
  festivals — Op Selamat 25, for example, was run for Chinese New Year 2026.
- **Forgetting the return flow.** The journey back to the cities can be as
  congested as the outbound journey — PLUS itself projects 2–2.3 million
  vehicles a day on the weekend after the festival.
- **Equating "kampung" with a rural village.** For many people today, the
  hometown itself is a city in another state.
