Your EPF savings do not have to sit in one place earning only the annual dividend. If you have built up more than the retirement floor the EPF requires, you are allowed to put a measured portion of it into unit trust funds — and since 2019 you can do it yourself, online, without an agent.

That is what the Members Investment Scheme (MIS) is. Inside your i-Akaun it appears as the **i-Invest** tool, the member-directed side of the scheme where you choose the fund and place the order. It is one option among several — leaving your savings with the EPF to earn the annual dividend is the other.

## Who can use it?

The scheme is open to EPF members from age **18 up to below 55** who hold savings above their Basic Savings threshold. Members aged 55 and above no longer use MIS — they invest through the Age 55/60 Withdrawal (Investment) route instead.

Basic Savings is the protected floor. It is set by age and scales upward: under the Basic Savings schedule effective 1 January 2026, the amounts build up to **RM390,000 at age 60** — the level the EPF frames as enough for about RM1,625 a month across 20 years of retirement (age 60 to 80). Only what you hold *above* the floor set for your age is ever in play.

## How much can I actually invest?

Not everything above the floor. The rule is **30% of the surplus**:

| Step | Figure (illustrative only) |
| --- | --- |
| Akaun Persaraan balance | RM100,000 |
| Less: Basic Savings for your age | RM40,000 |
| Surplus | RM60,000 |
| Eligible to invest (30% of surplus) | RM18,000 |

The numbers above are an example, not your case. Basic Savings depends on your exact age and rises toward the RM390,000 age-60 figure, so the "less Basic Savings" line will differ for you. Two firm limits apply to everyone:

- **Minimum RM1,000** per transaction.
- Your eligible amount is **valid for three months at a time**. Once that window lapses, the figure is refreshed against your current balance and Basic Savings — so in practice you can make a fresh transfer roughly once every three months, not continuously.

## i-Invest versus an agent

The main practical difference is cost. Buying the same approved funds through the online i-Invest platform caps the **sales charge at 0.5%** of the transaction, against as much as **3%** through traditional agent channels. The funds themselves are drawn from a list the EPF approves and reviews, spread across the fund management institutions on the panel; the choice of fund is yours either way.

## What it does not do

MIS is not a withdrawal and not a guarantee. The money stays within the EPF framework — you are switching part of your savings from the EPF's own returns into a market-linked fund that can fall as well as rise. There is no promised return, and poor fund performance can leave you with less than the dividend you would have earned by leaving the savings with the EPF. That trade-off is the whole point of the decision, and it cuts both ways.

## What's next

- Log in to i-Akaun and open **i-Invest** to see your own eligible amount — it is calculated for you, so you never have to work out Basic Savings by hand.
- Compare funds on the EPF's approved list, checking each fund's fees and past performance, and weigh them against simply keeping the savings in the EPF.
- Revisit after three months, when your eligibility window refreshes, rather than assuming last quarter's figure still stands.
