# Malaysia's Rubber Industry: A Shrinking Crop Feeding a Global Glove Business > Malaysia grows less natural rubber every year, yet remains the world's largest producer of rubber gloves. The country shipped out more raw rubber than its own trees gave up that month. That single line is the whole story of the modern Malaysian rubber industry. In the same year, the volume of natural rubber available for the domestic downstream industry and for export reached 1.06 million tonnes — close to three times the national harvest. The gap is filled by imports. So the country's rubber *trade* and rubber *factories* now operate at a scale its plantations cannot supply. Malaysia buys rubber to process, compound and re-export, and buys synthetic latex for the products where natural rubber is not the input of choice. Meanwhile the crop keeps thinning. Quarterly output fell from 117,040 tonnes in Q4 2024 to 79,247 tonnes in Q4 2025 — a 32.3% drop. Production is now overwhelmingly a smallholder activity: estates contributed just 10.6% of May 2026 output, the residue of decades of estate land moving to [oil palm](/en/economy/palm-oil-sector), which is less labour-intensive per hectare. ## Where the money is Raw rubber leaves Malaysia by the tonne. Rubber *products* leave by the billion ringgit. - Gloves are reported by DOSM every month as the leading rubber-based export. Across the DOSM releases cited here they ran between RM0.9 billion and RM1.4 billion a month (November 2025 to May 2026). - In 2023, glove exports were RM11.8 billion, or 42.8% of Malaysia's RM27.8 billion total rubber industry exports, according to a parliamentary reply by the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities. - A February 2026 ministerial reply put rubber glove exports at RM15.57 billion and 46% of total rubber-based exports, with Malaysia the world's largest glove producer and second-largest condom producer. - MIDA puts latex products — gloves, condoms, catheters and latex thread — at about 80% of the total value of Malaysia's rubber exports, produced by more than 125 manufacturers, alongside 185-plus companies making industrial rubber goods. ## Common misreadings **"Malaysia is a top rubber producer."** Not any more. MIDA places Malaysia 7th globally in natural rubber production. The country's global standing today is in manufactured rubber goods, not in the commodity. **"Rubber gloves are made from Malaysian rubber."** Many are not made from natural rubber at all — nitrile and other synthetic latex account for a large share of glove output, and the natural latex that is used is not necessarily locally tapped. **"Falling production means a falling industry."** The two series move independently. Output volume tracks tapping labour, replanting cycles and weather; export earnings track downstream demand, product mix and price. ## Regulation and the sustainability layer The Malaysian Rubber Board (Lembaga Getah Malaysia, MRB) is the statutory custodian of the industry, under the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities. Alongside licensing and research, MRB administers the Malaysian Sustainable Natural Rubber (MSNR) scheme, which is being used to position Malaysian rubber for the European Union Deforestation Regulation. Compliance inspections extend to smallholders and estates across Peninsular Malaysia; MRB publishes the programme's coverage and progress directly.
