## What has MARDI produced for rice farmers?

Rice is MARDI's most visible output. The paddy and rice programme develops hybrid, inbred and specialty varieties, production systems, pest-management technology and post-harvest handling methods. Its released varieties dominate Malaysian padi fields.

MARDI also curates a national crop genebank that conserves more than 16,000 plant accessions, of which rice — about 13,020 accessions — is the largest single collection.

## Where does MARDI fit in national padi programmes?

Malaysia's flagship effort to close its rice self-sufficiency gap is the Large-Scale SMART Paddy Field programme, known as SMART SBB or "Mini Sekinchan." Led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, it consolidates individual smallholdings into systematically managed blocks using transplanters and Internet-of-Things monitoring.

The programme aims to raise yields from an average of about 3.75 t/ha toward a target of seven to ten tonnes per hectare per farmer. By mid-2023 it covered more than 11,000 hectares nationwide, involved roughly 5,000 farmers, and had lifted rice yields by more than 50 per cent in participating areas.
